Where culture comes alive
Kalithattu was born from a simple belief — that every community deserves a space to celebrate, learn, and pass on the traditions that make us who we are.
How we began
Founded in 2009 by a group of artists, educators, and community organisers, Kalithattu started as a small weekend gathering in a borrowed hall. We ran workshops in classical dance, folk music, and traditional crafts — and the community showed up.
Over the years, those gatherings grew into a full cultural centre with a permanent home in the heart of the city. Today we host over 200 events a year, welcome thousands of visitors, and run programmes for children, families, and elders alike.
Our name — Kalithattu — means 'the stage of play'. It captures everything we stand for: a place where art is not a spectacle but a living practice, where everyone is welcome to participate, not just observe.

Meenakshi Rajan
Founder & Artistic Director
A Bharatanatyam dancer with 30 years of performance and teaching experience, Meenakshi founded Kalithattu to create the space she always wished had existed.
Arjun Pillai
Executive Director
Arjun brings 15 years of cultural sector management to Kalithattu, overseeing operations, partnerships, and the centre's long-term vision.
Divya Krishnan
Head of Programmes
Divya designs and curates Kalithattu's events calendar, working closely with artists and community groups to build a programme that reflects the city's diversity.
Ravi Subramaniam
Community Engagement Lead
Ravi runs our outreach work in schools and neighbourhoods, bringing Kalithattu's programmes to those who might not otherwise find us.
